Asbestos

The material looks like charcoal (black and can be crushed to a powder) but smells like sulfer. Is this asbestos? Does anyone know the name of this type of insulation. It was found around a two inch pipe.

    It is called Cellular Glass.
It does not have asbestos in it at all. It can get wet and it will dry with no damage.
It is commonly used today. I am on a job that we are installing it on 4″ steel piping outside.
It is usually wrapped in aluminum jacketing.
It is expensive and only made to order.
