Nearly every house built before 1960 has asbestos in it somewhere. Asbestos was a commonly used product at that time, due to its fire resistance capabilities. It is not illegal to have asbestos in a home and/or rental property, and it is not dangerous as long as it is ‘encapsulated’, such as in exterior asbestos siding or interior floor tiles.

Check the laws in your state. I am sure you will find something about disclosure.

Check the regulations in your state. The State of California requires that certain landlords disclose the presence of asbestos containing materials in the buildings which they rent out. This disclosure requirement pertains only to post 1978 construction.

I would contact your city offices first thing in the morning and find out. This is serious and could affect your health.

Its also present in older floor tile. The only problem is when its removed – then precautions must be taken.

Asbestos is present in a lot of older homes in the form of textured ceilings – it only becomes a problem if it is deteriorating and entering the air as dust. A coat of paint will keep it in place.
