We used to play with Mercury in High School, how come I am still here?

Asbestos
in chemistry class back in the 60′s, used to roll it along the counters, now you have to call in the Army or something for disposal, with space suits on, same thing with asbestos flooring removal, big money maker?
Do the lawyers in this country have everyone tied up in knots?

that’s what my dad always says too. he said they’d roll it around on their hands…
it is dangerous, but the lawyers are even worse.

The lawyers don ‘t have everyone tied up in knots. You have to be more specific. You did not take that mercury internally. Did you you put any lead in your mouth or swallow any? Apparently you didn’t or you would have gotten sick.

in elementary school, we put in on real silver dimes and quarters. It made them really shine! And i’m still here too

We rolled it around on copper pennies and it turned them silver like a dime. I don’t remember scrubbing my hands after playing with it. All our homes and furniture had lead paint. Sometimes I wonder too!

Mercury exposure and asbestos exposure are very real threats to people’s health. It is not made up. Do a search on “mercury poisoning” or “asbestos lung” and you will find lots of information.
Mercury, like lead or other “heavy” metals accumulate in your body over a lifetime. There is not much of a mechanism to remove it naturally. When you reach the magic threshold for your body, problems will start. You may have introduced a relatively large amount when you were in high school, and then had just routine exposure – still adding up to the magic threshold – but not yet reached.
You were also being exposed by pure mercury – not as toxic as other compounds that contain mercury, like methylmercury. (see link)
The real person you need to check out is that high school teacher. You were exposed to it for a couple of classes. That teacher was exposed to it in many classes, and breathed the vapor for days — year after year.
To send a worker to deal with something we know accumulates in the body over a lifetime requires that we protect them. Mercury is absorbed through the skin and inhaled into the lungs — so it makes sense to suit them up and give them respirators.
Very young children and the unborn are especially sensitive to mercury exposure, thus the warning that pregnant women should not eat tuna (a fish at the top of the food chain that accumulates mercury in it’s body and then into ours when we eat it)

It’s not only the lawyers.
And it’s not only mercury.
Lead and Mold are also good examples.
No question that the substances can be dangerous,
but the dangers are exagerated.
In most cases really large exposures are necessary
before any effect is felt.
But there’s money to be made from the ‘panic’s.
Think of all the ‘unemployable’s who get work from them.
We not only played with Mercury, but handled Asbestos rockspecimenss, worked with Benzene in Organic Chem. and sniffed it
to identify it, along with Carbon Tet, and all sorts of other
‘forbidden nasties’, and we survived just fine.
InRe Mercury, forget the playing with it in Chem lab!
Most of our generation spent most of our lives with mercury amalgam
fillings in our mouths.
The ‘Keystone Kop` aspect of the EPA cleaning out the residents of that
old GE. plant that had ‘gone condo’ still raises a giggle.
Here’s the EPA, in isolation suits chasing out people who have been
living in the place, ‘in their shorts’ , for months without harm.
Please excuse the rant, – you pushed a button with that one.
