Is millboard containing asbestos considered friable?

Asbestos

In the plant I work in, there is some white boarding that covers the outside of a huge air conditioning vent. It is also between the two metal vents as well. I accidently rubbed my hand against these boards. This plant was built back in the 60s and I am just curious as if this could have released asbestos fibers and if I should be concered.

Yes, unless it is contained inside something substantial it is indeed friable. For example, it you bumped it and a bit chipped off it would pose a health risk.

If should be isolated behind a layer of drywall or something.

I don,t think I would worry too much, friable asbestos is like the stuff used for plumming insulation, non friable is like floor tiles and sounds like the stuff you,re talking about. If you want to know for sure, contact OSHA and have them check it out.

I’m sure it’s not asbestos. freak out elsewhere.
asbestos was not used for air conditioning, it was used for steam, boilers & hot water piping because it does not burn. also in small quantities in floor tile.

The major way asbestos gets dangerous is when it gets air born for us to breath. There are some other considerations where it can enter the body. In this case, no mater what it is dangerous just because of the potential for it to get air born when work is done on it or near by. It should be marked as dangerous now and replaced as soon as possible.
