Asbestos

The floor is in nice condition but recently I began suspecting it could contain asbestos (they’re 9×9 tiles from the 60s). here’s a picture: http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8009/photo61ip1.jpg

if the floor is in nice conditon why pull it? Asbestos is only hazardous if it is in dust form and airborne.. Most of the municipal water mains in evey city in the U.S. are made from asbestos concrete pipe. Not hazardous be cause you cant inhale it.. dont disurb your floor overlay it if you need change in your life…

The best way to deal with old asbestos floor tile is to cover them up. I watched asbestos tile being covered on a home
improvement show, and I had heard that before.
Call your local building inspector, They will give you more information.
Removing asbestos floor is not a DIY job.
    Good Luck

Since asbestos is proven to cause cancer, you definitly should not remove the floor yourself. By removing it yourself you could cause it to become airborne which would obviously be very hazardous. I would cover it up if i were you with different flooring, but if you would rather remove it all together you need to hire a company that specializes in removal of asbestos flooring, walls, siding, etc…They know how to treat and deal with it.

If it’s in good shape and you like it, keep it sealed with floor wax. If you don’t like it glue some vinyl over it.

  7. As catskinner said as long as it is not chalking, turning to dust or anything it is still considered safe. Smaking it with a hammer and prying it with a putty knife may change that condition. You can lay new vinyl tile over it without much of a problem.

Have it checked out professionally as asbestos removal is not for the DIY people regardless of what you have been told.
I have worked doing that under professional inspection.

Look at what the state has to say:

It is often necessary to remove and replace asbestos floor tile with non-asbestos tile. Typically, the asbestos tile is manually removed by scraping and breaking sections of the tile with a knife and other blade devices, which can cause dangerous asbestos particles to become airborne. Simply forcing or, breaking off the asbestos tile by mechanical means is laborious, relatively expensive, inefficient and hazardous to the workers and others within the general environment.
