I have 12 by 12 vinyl floor tiles I am removing. They are 20 years old, or so.. How do I know if there is an asbestos risk?

  1. The Mexican Flu – Swine Flu

You should have a specialist check it before you remove them.

There should not be any asbestos in floor tiles. Firstly because they knew that asbestos was dangerous and secondly because it would not be used in something you walk on. This would potentially give the problem of the asbestos being worn away and becoming airborne where it is most dangerous.
If you are still worried, keep a spray bottle of water handy to soak any broken edges and wear a dust mask purely for reassurance purposes.

  3. Hide Folders

If they are only 20 years old, it’s not likely they contain asbestos. Even if they do, it’s only hazardous if you are sawing them, or creating dust. Asbestos hasn’t been used in floor tiles since the 50′s or 60′s.

The 12 x 12 tiles do not contain asbestos. The 9×9 ones do if they are are about 40 years of age. If you are concerned it wouldn’t hurt to wear a respirator in case it gets dusty.

  5. I LAID some sticky tiles about five or six years ago that had asbestos in them. Theres a good chance yours do too. The beauty about it is that asbestos is safe as long as it’s not broken up or pulverized. Either lay your new floor right over them or resort to a method that won’t release the fibers into the air, such as a combination of adhesive remover, putty knife and elbow grease. Good luck.
