How can I tell if my house has asbestos?

Asbestos

I need to totally remodel my rental and I need to replace all the sheet rock. How do I find out if the walls have asbestos in them. Then what do I do about getting rid of the asbestos walls. Can I take them out myself or do I have to pay someone to come get them out?

You need a professional to detect asbestos.

I have been a doctor for 25 years and have only seen a couple of patients who had asbestosis and one with mesothelioma. All had worked for years with commercial outdoor asbestos pipe insulation.

The people who remove asbestos for a living every day of their lives are about the only ones really at risk.

Seldom was there asbestos used in home construction. Call the local office of the EPA and they will tell you how to check. If there is any then do yourself a favor and hire it removed. Very dangerous.

Hi i am writing this from a UK legislation perspective but would imagine if you are in the USA then they would adopt a similar approach to our system within the UK.

So here goes there are 3 types of asbestos survey available dependent on your forthcoming plans on site (i.e. you mentioned proposed re-furbishment works) then you would require a Type 3.

See the brief description of the 3 types of asbestos survey below

    Type 1

Location and assessment survey (presumptive survey)

    Type 2

Standard Sampling, identification and assessment survey (sampling survey)

    Type 3

Full access sampling and identification survey (pre-demolition/refurbishment survey)

Upon discorvering within the completed survey report the outcome of your asbestos within your home you then plan for removal.

In the UK you are allowed to remove asbestos cement products using carefull techniques and RPE equipment and then calling a licensed waste carrier to collect the product and dispose of at a licensed landfill site or waste transfer station, but i would always recomend using a Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor whatever the product identified and they will take care of the whole project for you.

  4. I am certified in asbestos abatement. Chances are , unless your house is very very old, it does not contain asbestos. You ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT REMOVE THIS.. it will kill you slowly. Mesothelioma and Asbestosis are a terrible way to die. A single asbestos fiber which is air-born will float in a room indefinitely without coming down. These fibers need to be contained and vacuumed up with special filters. If I found that my apartment had this substance in it I WOULD MOVE TODAY!! So if you own this it may be worth investigating… but it will be very costly to remove if it is Asbestos. But, I would bet on it , that is isn’t.
