Does anyone know anything about Asbestos siding?

Asbestos
My bf and I are looking to by a house – we found one we really like but our inspector informed us that the siding was Asbestos. We are not familiar with this at all. Did some research and found out that in some cases it is an easy fix and in some instances nothing needs to be done or removed… Anyone have any tips or any information on Asbestos siding as far as removing, covering or leaving it goes?

Well I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it’s actually illegal to have asbestos siding since it can leas to adverse effects on one’s healthy. I would tell the seller to take care of that and then you’ll consider a deal.

It’s on the outside of the house, don’t worry about it. If you think it’s a problem, then check with your local building department and ask what there position is on it. They will tell you anything you should know about it or removing it and what should be done.

one problem with leaving it is, sooner or later you will want to cover it with regular siding, when you do that some of it will be damaged by nails or whatever, when it is damaged it will release airborne particle’s that can get into your lungs, and it only take a very tiny amount to cause you to have cancer in the future. I would make the present owner tear it off at his expense, or have an estimate down on the removal, and have the owner go down that many dollars on the contract price. if he don’t agree, look for another house. its a buyers market right now, a lot of houses are for sale and some owners are desperate to get rid of them

well it causes cancer so wear a mask and should be easy to remove….. also it does not taste like cotton candy and scrapes the inside of your mouth and esophogus

Asbestos is dangerous in airborne form. Which the biggest way to make it particulate is by cutting it. You can side over the existing, and not have to get an abaitment company in there. Or to remove it, call an asbestose abaitment company. it is VERY pricey. Most of the precautions are hokey pokey, but there the law.

it is perfectly safe ’till you go removing it. covering it is safe and it adds greatly to your insulation. i prime with oil primer before covering, that will seal it well!
Our last house had asbestos siding. As long as you do not remove it and it is in good condition there is nothing to worry about. Some people have it removed and that is costly as you need a special permit and the contractor has to be certified. It depends on which state you live in. Many simply leave it alone or cover it up with another siding. We also did not have any trouble selling it last summer. Asbestos siding in good condition is actually very durable.
