Basement can get wet during rainy season. (Working on that) Also may have asbestos so we do not want to disturb it at all. Will be puttin small area rugs in to soften it up. Approx 1000 sq ft.

I am not sure if it is asbestos in our laundry but prefer to treat it as though it is. My husband doesn’t think the same and a few months back he drilled some holes to hang a paper towel rack on the wall. I wasn’t there at the time so not sure if any dust came out, but I imagine it is invisible?
My concern is we have a lot of uncovered baby gear in the laundry: prams, car seat and carrier. Our baby is due in four months and now I am worried they might have invisible dust on them. If I hose them off and wash them down thoroughly would they be ok or do I have to throw everything out??
I am very upset and can’t stop worrying about it, please help.
Thx but I have checked out testing and we would need to make a hole in the wall about 3cm x 3cm to take to a lab which concerns me greatly (putting hole in wall and releasing more asbestos). Can anyone set my mind at rest re whether washing down the baby items will remove all possible risk?

I’m helping a friend with some work on a new condo she just bought. It was built in 1979, and the existing flooring is parquet that we’ve started to remove. We are assuming it was the original flooring because it is consistent with other units in the same complex.

I am a contractor by profession, and I should have thought about this earlier, but what are the chances the adhesive used contains asbestos? It is grayish green in color. It is still firm. It does not appear to have broken down at all. A home inspection was conducted prior to the purchase, and it wasn’t noted. Also, since this flooring seems to be consistent amongst the original units, if there was a hazardous material issue, I’m sure the condo association would have notified tenants and included that information in the condo documents.

Obviously, there is no way to confirm with any degree of certainty without testing, and at this point, it’s a little late, but does anyone feel there should be a concern?

Our house was built in 1939 and has plaster walls and ceilings. While a friend was cutting through the ceiling in order to install can lights, it dawned on him that the sheetrock behind the plaster may contain asbestos–it is sheetrock covered with brown paper on both sides.

Is there a sure way to tell if the sheetrock does contain asbestos without paying for testing?

How safe is it to cut into the sheetrock if it does contain asbestos? We’re only installing 8 more can lights.

I’ve done research and know that asbestos is harmful, but I don’t know how much I have to fear being exposed in minimal and temporary doses like this.

Ok , my friend was ripping out 30 year old carpet in a 80 year old house and he found that under the carpet is nothing but asbestos . He wants to know what he should do as far as who to call , and he wants to know whats going to happen when he does call . like what are they going to do to his house . He seems to think that the house is going to be tented and the whole neighborhood is going to think something bad has happened . Also he is worried about the cost cause he is almost broke and was going to just put in new tile himself . Please give me real answers to these questions . Thanks .

Does anyone know if contractors in NY State must have a house tested for ASBESTOS before tearing out drywall, flooring, sheetrock, etc? I’ve heard that OSHA demands testing on any building, even private homes if it is built before 1974 to protect workers from ASBESTOS exposure. If a contractor gets caught doing even the smallest of tear-outs, he could face a heavy fine for not getting testing done prior to tear-out. Is this true, could you provide a link to a law?

I recently bought a house and am wanting to redo the basement floors. The problem is my house was built in 1949 and I was told that there is most likely asbestos underneath the tile. I don’t want to deal with removing the possible asbestos so I was curious if I could just cover the tiles with a laminate floor. I asked someone at Home Depot and they said that I could cover it with carpet (although their stores wouldn’t do it) but I was curious about laminate.

My husband and i are beginning the demolition phase in remodeling our bathroom. Our house was built in 1979, and when we tore out one of the walls, we found pink fiberglass insulation. I am pretty sure it is asbestos. How do we deal with this problem? Should we remove it and replace it (taking all precautions necessary of course, but i have a feeling this may be breaking some environmental laws) or seal the walls back up asap?

I want to remove the vinyl flooring I placed in our home 4 years ago. Reading on the internet on “how to remove vinly flooring,” I read to be aware of possible asbestos contamination. Should I worry about this? Please help
