Asbestos

Asbestos is the term for a group of minerals which have rather amazing qualities. They are heat resistant, do not conduct electricity, block sound, and resist chemical change. As well, they are fibrous and very durable and strong.

For about a century until the 1970s or 1980s, asbestos was mined worldwide and used in many industries. Family homes, schools, and most buildings of any type had asbestos in insulation for electrical wires, in drywall, flooring, ceiling tiles, and plumbing. The people who worked in industries using asbestos, or who worked in asbestos mines, were exposed daily to the tiny asbestos fibers which easily become airborne. From the air, they get stuck in clothing, hair, shoes, food and drinks. So they were breathed in daily, and ingested in meals. Family members were exposed to the fibers brought home in clothing etc.

Most asbestos mines have been closed down. But wherever asbestos was extracted from the earth or processed in nearby plants, the fibers remain in dust, in the soil, blown by the wind, posing a hazard to local residents. All those sites need to be cleaned up and the asbestos safely disposed of. The Federal Government has been active in this, in particular the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA).

There are many abandoned asbestos mines across the U.S. and in other countries such as Britain, Australia and South Africa. In Britain and Australia, cleanup is underway. In South Africa, it has not begun at all and from many old mines, blue asbestos fibers (the most deadly type of fibers) blow every day on to nearby communities. Those mines were owned and run by various international companies, including one owned by Stephen Schmidheiny, a Swiss environmentalist who began the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Recent Clean-up Efforts

In this country, the U.S. Geological Survey has conducted a long project to identify and map asbestos mines and the occurrences of asbestos, whether or not they have been mined. The E.P.A. is now supervising a variety of Superfund cleanup projects nationwide, of which the following are some examples.

· The Coalinga Asbestos Mine, Coalinga, California

· The Vermont Asbestos Group mine on Belvedere Mt. In Vermont

· Chicago Milwaukee Corporation (CMC) Bozeman Asbestos Facility in Montana

W.R. Grace & Co. in Montana

In August, 2004, clean up began at a mine at Libby, Montana, which was blowing asbestos into a power substation in Salt Lake City, Utah. For forty years asbestos had been processed nearby at Libby. One of the large corporations involved is W.R. Grace & Co. This company had previously mined vermiculite (another useful mineral used in insulation) which occurred here mixed in with asbestos.

Grace has been the subject of over 70,000 lawsuits involving mesothelioma and asbestosis, and has been investigated by a U.S. Grand Jury for “crimes” committed at its Libby vermiculite mine.

PacifiCorp (previously called Utah Power and Light) has an agreement with the E.P.A. to clean out asbestos from the substation in downtown Salt Lake City. They will be excavating and disposing of about 3,900 cubic yards of dust and soil contaminated by asbestos.

In March, 2008, Grace agreed to pay $250 million for government cleanup at the Libby mine. That is the largest fine every imposed under the E.P.A.’s Superfund cleanup program.

Asbestos cleanup will clearly be ongoing for quite some time yet. It can be very expensive, as it requires specially-trained workers, and must be done to a high standard to make each contaminated area safe again.

If you have been diagnosed with asbestosis or mesothelioma, the two deadly diseases caused mostly by asbestos fibers, you may be able to obtain compensation for your medical costs, pain and suffering, and perhaps more. The first step would be to arrange a free consultation with an experienced asbestos attorney. He or she would assess your situation and advise you of your legal rights and options.

RSS Feed Reader

Asbestos

With all the information we know about asbestos and the harm it can cause, you might be surprised to find out the number of materials where this known carcinogen can still be found. Most of these materials are found in trades such as construction and ship building, as well as mining. Cement pipes, vinyl and asphalt floor tiles, laboratory gloves, fire blankets and different kinds of adhesives, caulking, and putties all contain asbestos. But what is asbestos really?

There are six mined minerals that can be loosely defined as part of the asbestos “family.” These are: actinolite, amosite, anthophyllite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and tremolite. Different products contain different minerals. For example, Kent brand cigarettes used crocidolite in their “Micronite” filters from 1952 to 1956. These minerals are found throughout the world, but asbestos is mostly mined in Russia, China, and Kazakhstan. The first known asbestos-related death goes back as far as 1906, when scientists and researchers began to notice that asbestos mining towns contained large numbers of lung problems and early deaths.

Yet its use continued to be prevalent, especially during World War II. At Hampton Roads, Virginia, a large shipbuilding area, asbestos was used to line boilers, wrap pipes, and cover turbine and engine parts. It has been estimated that for every thousand workers, 14 died of asbestos related illnesses. Mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer, is seven times higher in the Hampton Roads area than it is nationally. Asbestos was used in the first 40 floors of the World Trade Center. After the attack of 9/11, one of the particles which contaminated the air in lower Manhattan was asbestos.

Asbestos has been banned for use in construction projects in the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. However, the United States continues to allow asbestos in construction, just as the rapidly growing countries of India and China where it is most commonly used for roofing and walls of homes. The Environmental Protection Agency issued the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule in 1989. This was overturned in 1991 in the Corrosion Proof Fittings v. U.S. Environmental Agency, ensuring that asbestos will continued to be used, albeit in trace amounts.

There are many known substitutes for asbestos, including fiberglass, and stone- and glasswool insulation. Organic fibers have been incorporated in many products by companies that used to produce asbestos-cement products. While many sectors continue to use asbestos, many fire departments and the space agency have begun to use plybenzimidazole (PBl) fibers. This synthetic has a high melting point and will not ignite. Lastly, asbestos can be recycled into silicate glass, commonly used in the fabrication of semiconductor devices, but is defined as a hazardous waste in landfills.

When asbestos reaches the lungs, there is a chance the person who inhaled the particles will develop mesothelioma. This type of cancer is not caused by anything other than asbestos exposure and kills one of every one million people. While this number may not seem that high, the fact remains that a known dangerous product like asbestos is still in use with federal consent.

Asbestos

The Greeks termed asbestos the “miracle mineral” because it was soft, supple and could withstand heat. Miracle, indeed! Unfortunately, scientists have since shown that extended periods of exposure to asbestos can be deadly. You have to wonder how many of the Greeks fell ill late in life due to their exposure to this “miracle mineral.”

Around the end of World War II, asbestos became very popular with manufacturers and builders because of the same principles known to the Greeks. Asbestos is heat-resistant, fire-retardant, has tremendous sound absorption qualities and is very strong. Asbestos has been used in such products as brake shoes for vehicles, joint compound, stage curtains, interior fire doors, insulation, vinyl flooring and adhesives, fireproof clothing for fire fighters and the list goes on.

Prior to this, even dating back to the Greeks, physicians were starting to see a correlation between asbestos workers and medical conditions that were affecting their lungs. In 1898, the British Chief Inspector of Factories indicated asbestos workers ‘easily demonstrated’ health risks. In 1932, the U.S. Bureau of Mines sent a report to Eagle-Picher (one of the largest producers of asbestos) stating that “it is now known that asbestos dust is one of the most dangerous dusts to which man is exposed.”

These types of reports continued until the late 1980s when the U.S. EPA issued its Asbestos Ban and Phase Out Rule. Since then, buildings and products containing asbestos have been reclaimed and the allowable limits on asbestos in the workplace have been regulated to a greatly decreased level. Removing asbestos from buildings now requires heavy protection for both the workers and the area being reclaimed.

Unfortunately, for thousands of people employed in asbestos manufacturing plants and other industries where asbestos has been heavily used, the regulations may have come too late. It may take years, even decades, for the signs and symptoms of asbestos poisoning, or mesothelioma, to appear.

While the asbestos fibers are amazingly beautiful – resembling the snowy white beard of an aging southern gentleman – when inhaled, the sharp fibers (similar to fiberglass) imbed themselves into the lining around the lungs or abdomen and cause the deadly disease known as Mesothelioma.

Hide Folders

Asbestos

A lot of people are worried about asbestos, but what they do not realize is that undisturbed asbestos usually poses little or no problems.

On the other hand, everything should be done to prevent the release of asbestos fibres as they can cause serious damage to your health, especially to your lungs and be the cause of cancers. That is why asbestos surveys or asbestos removal should be done as soon as you find out that there is asbestos somewhere.

It is usually very difficult to see whether there is asbestos or not in a building or a home and that is why if you are not sure or have doubts, you should contact a company that will carry out asbestos surveys to find out more.

It is important to know though that if you think that you are living in a house with asbestos there is no need to panic. As long as asbestos is not damaged or disturbed, it is safe. That is why you should never do any type of work on asbestos materials like sawing it or drilling it.

The best thing to do is to contact specialists that will advise you of what to do and if an asbestos survey is necessary or if you need asbestos removal straight away.

As asbestos was commonly used between the fifties and the eighties, you will be most likely to find some in places like rainwater fall pipes, fire blankets, garage and shed roofs or even in floor tiles.

Interestingly, most people are exposed to a very low amount of asbestos that is present in the atmosphere but this as no effects of their health. This is completely normal since asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. On the other hand, asbestos fibres and dust are pretty dangerous if inhaled over a certain period of time and in higher concentrations. This inhalation can even cause lung diseases like cancer for example.

People really need to be aware of the danger of asbestos since it is the greatest single cause of deaths at work in the United Kingdom, and that is why asbestos awareness training are being done more and more in companies and that asbestos surveyors inspect many building to do asbestos surveys and find out whether the buildings we are working in are safe or not. Asbestos related diseases are responsible in the United Kingdom of around four thousand deaths every year.

Hide Folders

Asbestos

Lung cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the world. In the USA we have seen many cases of asbestos that are simply destroying entire families. Not only in states with a huge history in the construction industry, have show thousands of cases of asbestos victims, but over the last 15 years, mortality from lung cancer has more than tripled.

One of the most dramatic and serious problems with lung cancer is the most common and take 15 to 20 years to develop after exposure. Asbestosis, or scarring of the lung tissue, also takes 15 to 20 years to appear. This means that when asbestos starts to reveals it’s presence the people responsible of the damages based on asbestos may be already out of business or not even alive.

Althoug many companies are already aware of the dangers of asbestos, removing asbestos from older buildings is a difficult, dangerous and expensive process, and clearly not a job for amateurs. There is good reason for all these precautions. Removing asbestos from public buildings must be done by a licensed contractor who is registered with the state. Obviously this sort of rules and conditions in the law, change of each states in the USA.

So why do we still have buildings with asbestos? Well, the main reason is that depending on the extent of the work, removing or abating asbestos in a public building can run into hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, a very, very expensive kind of work for any company to afford.

In all the parts of the US, building owners are required to perform in-depth surveys of their property and report to the construction inspectors. If asbestos qualifies for removal, the building owner must contact and hire an authorized asbestos removal company, which will take care of this dangerous quemical, including removing it, transporting it and destoying it.

In many cases if buildings are going to be destroyed, there are not allowed to to be demolished if there is friable asbestos present. Also, any sort of schools or educational center are required by AHERA, the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, to be inspected and have a management plan prepared, which is to be maintained and available for public inspection.

Now the interesting thing is how health experts are so keen in having different points regarding asbestos. According to an university research , 2.3 of every 98,000 people living in buildings made from cement containing asbestos are liable to develop lung cancer. And it has been proved that health damage due to exposure to asbestos will certainly increase rapidly in the coming months and years. Healthcare maintenance workers and engineers can be unknowingly exposed to asbestos from many possible areas and sources.

Engineers can be exposed while working in furnace rooms where boilers are insulated with asbestos, or when making repairs to old piping or doing minor renovations.

Asbestos is commonly found in ultramafic rock, including serpentine, and near fault zones. The amount of asbestos that is typically present in these rocks can be usually less than 1% up to the high level 30%. So how really asbestos arrives to our lungs? Well, asbestos fibers can be released into the air when asbestos materials are destroyed. Objects with asbestos that remain in one piece represent little or no risk for our health.

youtube friend adder
