Can I lay laminate floors OVER my existing tile floor?

Asbestos

I recently bought a house and am wanting to redo the basement floors. The problem is my house was built in 1949 and I was told that there is most likely asbestos underneath the tile. I don’t want to deal with removing the possible asbestos so I was curious if I could just cover the tiles with a laminate floor. I asked someone at Home Depot and they said that I could cover it with carpet (although their stores wouldn’t do it) but I was curious about laminate.

Assuming this is VCT or vinyl tile. You will be perfectly fine in doing so.
Laying this over ceramic tile would not be a good idea.

I think you can. We covered some 9″tile with carpeting a while ago, and I help my son put a new floor over old tile… it was wood laminate (the new stuff)…

The only thing I would worry about is water if your basement leaks. That’s a whole different question tho.

  3. take a var thane and coat the floor to seal it. Then I would put the foam and then the laminated floor. More then likely the tile has asbestos in it, because back then they made tile that had asbestos.

I did it in my kitchen. Well, not me personally. Professional installers did it. They just laid down a liner type thing and put the laminate right on top. That was three years ago and I haven’t had any trouble with it at all.
