Braking and Asbestos?

Asbestos

Does braking when driving release asbestos? I am just curious. You would think that if it did, than these brakes would be banned. I had to hard brake last night to a stop when I had the windows down and is there any risk of asbestos exposure to it?

…what? Do they even put asbestos in breaks, it’s a fire retardent used for buildings and the stuff isn’t even legal anymore to use because of resperatory problems it causes, I’m sure that if you have a car that was made post 1970 it probably doesn’t have any asbestos in it, or everytime we hit the breaks we’d be inhailing it.

Besides, I’ve been around asbestos for extended periods of time and I got a little sick from it like lightheaded and congestion, never anything serious though….

I’m sure asbestos was removed from brake linings years ago. Reason I am sure is because initially the newly introduced replacement linings did not last very long compared to the old asbestos linings.

A trace of asbestos fiber is not dangerous. What is very dangerous is daily exposure to the fibers or dust in a job setting or being older and a long time smoker. They used to put asbestos in some brands of cigarette filters.

They DO NOT use it anymore for brake pads or brake shoes. It has been over 15 years since they last used it.
