Asbestos in ceiling?

Asbestos
There was a flood in our house the other week and the ceiling got damaged, we live in MOD property so they come and fix it. The contractors were due to come out tomorrow to replace the ceiling but they have canceled at the last minute saying there is asbestos in the ceiling and they need a Specialist company to come out. My question is….will the asbestos harm my family because im sure it will be in the air when they rip the old ceiling out, I have 3 children and myself and my 1 year old will be home when the work gets carried out. Do you think we should stop in a hotel? if so how long for? (im not sure how long it will take to clear the air.) The ceiling getting replaced is in the downstairs hallway just outside the kitchen door so I will be in and out the kitchen getting bottles etc for my daughter.
Please could someone tell me how dangerous this stuff is?

Well when I found out our rental house had asbestos I broke he lease, stayed in a hotel, moved out and got a lawyer. Subsequently the house was condemned by the health dept.

If the correct kind of company comes out, they will be sealing that area off from the rest of the house. You will probably be better off, just because of the noise, to be out of the house the days they are working. You will not be able to go through the area while they work. If done correctly, their will be little danger and much less than when you had the ceiling to begin with. They will be using high velocity air exchangers, so clearing the area will not take long once they are finished. Now the specialty company usually will not put the new ceiling in. You need to talk to owner or the original contractor about that. You should also get copies of all the records.
