Most health problems caused by asbestos have been among people with very high levels of exposure like miners and people working in asbestos manufacturing and insulation. Smoking very definitely increases the risk of disease from asbestos exposure.

Frankly, I’d worry a lot more about getting hit by a car than killed by asbestos dust from brake shoes.
