Asbestos

How much danger would you say a bicyclist in a big American city would be in, in regards to contracting lung cancer, from breathing the particles of asbestos that come off the brake shoes of cars, that are constantly all around him, while he rides his bike? And I mean, yes, he shares the road with the traffic. Let’s say he rides every day, unless it is raining or there’s a blizzard outside.

I believe asbestos is no longer used.

Most new brake shoes and clutches no longer contain asbestos. Older products, however, may contain asbestos so there is still a risk of exposure. The risk to a cyclist is a bit above the risk to pedestrians due to the fact that you are often breathing deeply while cycling. OSHA does have an entire suite of procedures to minimize exposure of mechanics working on asbestos brake shoes and clutches

Most health problems caused by asbestos have been among people with very high levels of exposure like miners and people working in asbestos manufacturing and insulation. Smoking very definitely increases the risk of disease from asbestos exposure.

Frankly, I’d worry a lot more about getting hit by a car than killed by asbestos dust from brake shoes.

    Hope this helps.
